TILLANDSIA ‘Jitotol’ Butcher D* n/a

Notes from Renate Ehlers “EM890511, was collected in Oaxaca,( Mexico) Bochil near Jitotol on 6. 4. 1989. Mr. Hartman in Tuxtla Gutierrez told us by telephone, “Don’t go to this place, it is dangerous. Promise that you do not go off the road.” (But really the people in this region seemed to be not very educated. The propaganda for the election was: Death to Antonio .....Do not vote .....). But of course we went into the field (I had my pepper-spray in my pocket). Nothing untoward happened, the people we met were friendly and waved and wished us, “Buenos Dias.” In the area we found T. eizii, T. bochilensis, T. bochilensis x T. rodrigueziana, T. bochilensis x T. juncea, T. seleriana, T. schiedeana x T. seleriana (now called ‘Bochil’), T. multicaulis, T. lampropoda, T. adscendens ( Now Racinaea) , and a big Vriesea, both red and green forms. After hours of exploring and botanising we arrived safe to the car which was waiting for us.” Regrettably, Renate cannot remember which plant was collected at number 11 but one of the offsets did make its way to Adelaide, South Australia for the collection of Derek Butcher who flowered it and pondered. It was certainly not T. bochilensis but could well have had T. rodrigueziana somewhere in its make-up in years past. It will be recorded as ‘Jitotol’ in the BCR just in case it may be found again in this area. Reg. Doc. 2/2013 by D Butcher.
