NEOREGELIA ‘Illawarra Red’ ? / N Wood* 1950s?

Mature, upright, tubular rosette to 17cm. tall, flaring at the top to 20cm. diameter, with 2.5cm. long stolons. In strong light, bronzed garnet red leaves with some darker red spotting. Pale mauve flowers sit high up in the vase. Grown in the Illawarra region of southern New South Wales as N. "ampullacea rubra" for years but seems to be a hybrid not linked to this species. Thought to originate from a Sydney grower in the early 1950s, possibly an overseas import, but the breeder and exact parentage are unknown. Reg. Doc. 2/2016 by Neville Wood.
