BILLBERGIA ‘Muriel Waterman’ Foster, Mulford.B. 1946

cv. of horrida v. tigrina X euphemiae v. purpurea - (See 'Puerto Rico') - Rich plum-wine maroon heavily knuckled open rosette with vivid silvery scurfing and banding - from 10" to 20" tall - large nodding inflorescence with many dull rose-pink bracts and steel blue flowers - several slightly different cultivars exist but all suffer when fertilized and grown in low light conditions. Named to honor early New Zealand grower. UPDATE 11/ 2019. In the 1970s Queenslander Olwen Ferris bred a remake of B. 'Muriel Waterman' and listed it in her 1982-3 catalogue but the named progeny B. 'Bronze Wing' and 'Red Wing' do not seem to be in circulation in Australia.
