LA BALLONA VALLEY BROMELIAD SOCIETY NEWSLETTER APRIL 2009 **************************************************************** Meeting Meeting: Wednesday, 22 April at 7:30 pm in the Rotunda Room at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Speaker: Ray Van Veen will speak about bromeliads of Venezuela. Raffle: Please bring plants for the raffle table if you can. Thanks! Drinks: Jim Jaeger and Bennet & Peggy Kayser Food: Don Misumi, Alan Levy, and Nick Antrilli **************************************************************** Show information from Alan Levy The show is only a few weeks away, on May 2 and 3. Everyone is encouraged to enter plants and participate. It's a large auditorium, so we need 200 - 300 plants to fill the tables and make the show a success. Please enter as many bromeliads as you can. They don't have to be perfect or in bloom but they should be clean, nicely trimmed and in a clean pot. Enter plants that you would like to show off to your friends. Show plants should be brought in Friday between 4:30 and 8:00 PM. They can also be entered Saturday before 8:00 AM. There is also a category for artistic expression using Bromeliads. All members who enter at least 3 bromeliads in the show can bring plants in to be sold on the club sale table. You set the price and receive 70% if the plant is sold. Many people attend the show just to buy the treasures they find on the club sale table. Although bromeliads are preferred some other plants are accepted. All plants for sale must be double tagged with your sale number, the price and the name of the plant if you know it. If you do not have a sale number, call Alan -- (XXX)XXX-XXXX. (Last year's numbers are still good.) Plants can also be donated for club sales -- these do not need double tags. All plants, both show and sale, should be brought in DRY (drain the water from the cups). Help will be available to transport your plants from the parking lot into the auditorium. Set up for the show is Friday starting at 4:30 PM. Please come and help with covering the tables and placing the entries on display. Saturday, the judging starts at 8:00 AM and the sale area opens at 10:00. The show area opens as soon as the judges are finished. Help is needed both Saturday and Sunday at the two entry doors to greet guests and also on the show floor to provide security and answer questions. Please wear your badge and if possible, bring bags, boxes or flats for the sales area. Sunday, the doors open at 10:00. The plants can be picked up after we close at 4:00. With everybody helping, the clean up should go very quickly. Please enter plants just for the fun of it. I guarantee you will enjoy the experience. At the April 22 meeting, we will answer any questions and have all the necessary forms. You can also call Alan at (XXX)XXX-XXXX or Don at (XXX)XXX-XXXX. Editor's note: I'll second what Alan says. If a plant makes you happy, bring it on in -- the more, the merrier! The show is a wonderful opportunity to see many lovely plants and find new treasures for your collection, so please come by and help out (lunch will be provided, too). -- Jean **************************************************************** Administrivia The La Ballona Valley Bromeliad Society meets the fourth Wednesday of each month, January through October, in the Rotunda Room at Veterans Memorial Hall, 4117 Overland Avenue, Culver City.
