Genus: Karawata

Karawata is a genus of the subfamily Bromelioideae. It was accepted in 2019 after a morphological and phylogenetic studies of Aechmea subgenus Chevaliera that separated seven species into the new genus (A new genus of Bromeliaceae endemic to Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Maciel et al. 2019). The genus is named for the word in the native Tupi language, used by local people to identify bromeliad plants, particularly species of subgenus Chevaliera. They grow as ephiphytes, terrestrials and saxicoles in eastern Brazilian states.

Number of accepted species in this genus is 7 (source: species counts in the Encyclopaedia of Bromeliads).
