Allan,
As told to me by the late John Anderson, Guz " Fortuna" is one of the
myriad forms of lingulata, endemic to Panama from the Darien region. Tropiflora
had offered seedlings of this form once long ago, but withdrew the offering
siting that they don't always come true from seed. As previously mentioned,
this variety has the usual lingulata type bloom, though red with white flowers
and tips of the bracts, quite striking in a well grown plant.
Guzmanias on the whole generally occur at mid to higher elevations, and
prefer intermediate temperatures to prosper and do well. Perhaps that is why
your plant has been struggling, apparently getting some respite from temperature
extremes in the cooler shade of your greenhouse floor. The recent article in
the March/April issue of the BSI journal may be of interest with regard to
nutritional requirements of Guzmania. Best of luck. Kevin
