Dear All:
I offered a pup to Chris Blazier, who had requested pups on a previous
e-mail. Unfortunately, I can't offer any more pups at this time. I grow my Navia
igneosicola in my greenhouse, and here in New Orleans it gets quite hot in the
summer time, but that didn't seem to be a problem as long as it is well watered.
I came up with an idea that my Navia seems to like: right above it I placed a
jug with "good water" and a "mist maker" (you can get them at places that
sell indoor fountains or through plant supply catalogs). I have it set on a
timer, and make sure that I cut the plastic jug in a shape that directs the mist in
one direction.
The specimen is bathed during the noon and early afternoon hours all year
round, and I think that it helps to keep it from overheating. Right now it's
blooming and is displaying the full range of colors and producing a number of
pups. During winter I keep the greenhouse at 60 degrees Farenheit, and I don't
treat it as a cool grower. Guzmania conifera, a cool grower, along with
Tillandsia guatemalensis, are both blooming and out of the greenhouse, enjoying the
mild winters of New Orleans.
Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah to all of you
Sal Trabanino
